oh hey again? cool

i'm grey! i like to mess around with (i help maintain rustdoc, and have a few libraries of my own), and listen to all the time (i tend to post lyrics or links to whatever i'm listening to), and occasionally or or whatever catches my fancy at the moment

you can find me spouting platitudes or rambling about whatever i'm working on

leave the world with more love in it than when you started

my copy of The Rust Programming Language arrived! this is really cool to hold, and kinda surreal thinking of what it would have been like if i had found this book eight years ago in my college’s library

for this reason i’m considering getting a second copy so i can donate it to my local library >_>

OH NO! CARMEN SANDIEGO HAS STOLEN YOUR pronouns!

optimize software for love - all other optimizations should be secondary

new blog post: dissecting the loaded phrase "users are stupid," and why FOSS really could learn a lot from design.

it's the first post in a series I'm hoping to do about a lot of stuff on user experience and FOSS.

me: oh look it's a compilation video called "relaxing final fantasy music", this should be a good soundtrack to the afternoon *click*

me: oh no it's 10 hours long

i started up a youtube music premium trial yesterday, and i’m immediately putting it to work streaming soundtrack compilations in audio-only mode icosahedron.website/media/SOWo

I look up at the night sky.
"That's a pretty universe, God. You are wearing it well."
"Thanks," I hear in a faint whisper, "it has pockets."

The ritual complete, the demon appeared in the pentagram.
"You did not summon me last week," it rumbled.
"I'm sorry. The kitchen flooded-"
"I finished the book."
The demon held the book out for her sigil-bound hand.
"Did you like it?"
"I did. I would like to discuss it."
"Great!"

apologies for not being super active on masto, i've always been checking it but i went right back to posting rambles first on twitter then not cross-posting them at all >_>

i have just enough exposure to the first couple phases of the rust compiler thanks to messing with rustdoc, so i knew exactly which pieces i wanted to change to make everything easier for rustdoc

the problem is, it breaks a major assumption in the rest of the compiler, which i'll probably have to walk through

full story: twitter.com/QuietMisdreavus/st

short version: thanks to a quirk in the compiler, rustdoc wouldn't document things if there was a (valid) name collision thanks to namespaces

i went for the most direct fix and, as expected, it's a little ridiculous

current status: breaking into the rust compiler and changing a fundamental thing with the brazenness of a beginner

after realizing that i have no idea how things work

if you would like to support the things i do for rustdoc and rust in general, this is the place to throw recurring money at me

don't feel compelled to donate - i have a nice dayjob that lets me live comfortably

however, my dayjob is not "write code/docs for the rust project" so that's where this comes in
