Things you can do to make the fediverse better:
Never use hashtags, unless you are contributing to an ongoing topic of the kind somebody might have pinned (like "introductions" or "follow friday").
Instead, expand your immediate social network via your second- and third-tier connections.
Using hashtags to expand your network doesn't give you any benefit over looking at third-tier connections, because tag names spread via social links. All you get is a limited topic-oriented view.
@enkiv2 how come tho
@aeonofdiscord
@enkiv2 do you have an example of this problem in the wild? I use the #gamedev tag occasionally to search for gamedevs, which works because it's a widely-used term with no other meanings. I guess if you were a brewing enthusiast looking for information on #homebrew you might be annoyed to find a bunch of software stuff, but it looks like the beer nerds generally prefer #homebrewing
@enkiv2 I can see how each of these things would be annoying; otoh tumblr is subtly different from masto in that it provides affordances for tagging and separates tags out from the text, which seems to lead to overtagging (as in the evangelion example, or the joke/convention of adding about half a paragraph's worth of extra commentary in the tags). I'm less convinced that it's a problem on here because I actually don't see people use tags that much (apart from bots, which overtag like fuck)
@aeonofdiscord
Yeah, part of why I like the fediverse is that tag use is rare.
The protocol supports tag lists. It's a ui concern how to display & filter it.

On Tumblr, the "devo" tag is half the new wave band devo & half South American Catholics posting pics of the virgin. The "discord" tag is split between discordians, my little pony roleplayers, and gamers posting chat screenshots. "Evangelion" is 80% mech shows that aren't Evangelion.
Tags are never subtractive, only additive. Combine with their other issues.
This could be remedied if thought was put in: sql style filters on tags, etc.
