HI EVERYONE!!!!

I'm Alana, formerly @alana. I run an InfoSec website (tofusec.me), I'm @chee 's internet daughter, I'm 15, I'm extraordinarily queer, I'm very vegan, and I'm excited to meet all of you!

Alexa recorded a couple's private conversation and sent it to a random contact.

Amazon said it's "an extremely rare occurrence."

Get this thing out of your home, folks.

this is the exact purpose for which information technology exists. I support your collective sharing and partaking of information relevant to your lives

the CVE they're referring to involves crafting a .desktop file that masquerades as a non-executable file by changing its displayed name and icon in the file manager. it's an extremely simple attack that proves that .desktop files were a mistake: the FM should always show the exact name and type of every file, not privilege certain types

There are people who still don’t know what a browser is, as they use one to get to Google

They equate email with GMail, they think of Facebook as the internet

These people are no less deserving of a freedom from vendor lock-in or proprietary software than those who are more tech-literate

@Jo Gnome is built to make people switch to better DE. Supposedly the devs found out people were out there actually using gnome on a day to day basis and have tried hard to rectify this problem.

Ubuntu's great but I prefer the original, Ubunone

If you're going to read anyone talking about the PGP and S/MIME mess, read Matthew Green:

Me in IRC:

"Please do your communities a service by not simply spread panic and poor guidance." 😅

@karasu @mulander Some debrief on this might be useful. Even if there were a significant bug in PGP there's a calculation to be made as to how likely it is to be exploited in the wild versus the security advantages. Telling people to turn off or uninstall encryption is really bad advice, which indicates to me that even people at EFF don't have much of a sense of threat models. It took a lot of effort to get anyone to encrypt their email, so throwing that all away based upon an insubstantial claim is quite awful.

#Iron in #vegetarian diets - the Medical Journal of Australia.

There is NO increased risk of iron deficiency or anaemia on a typical vegetarian diet. The 80% increased RDI for vegetarians is questionable and many studies show this is unnecessary. Vegetarians typically eat more vitamin C which possibly facilitates adequate non-haem iron absorption. #vegan #nutrition

I have two #vegetarian wishes.

1) A checkbox on online grocery shopping websites that says “hide all non-vegetarian products”.

2) More than one vegetarian option per course on event menus.

I hate the "robots are immortal" meme.

You ever seen an 80 year old computer? No? That's because an 80 year old computer is a
whole lot harder to keep running than an 80 year old human.

There are plenty of thirty year old computers around, but, you know what? I'll bet their survival rate is lower than 30 year old people, even when those people in question subsist on gas station hot dogs and coca cola.

EFF went cuckoo and wants everyone to disable GPG or PGP in every email client. Because GPG/MIME is vulnerable and… plaintext email is more secure?

eff.org/deeplinks/2018/05/atte

My guess it's because GPG has no perfect forward secrecy: once unlocked, it stays unlocked, including all your past emails. And if it's vulnerable then you're risking opening all your keys. But we didn't remove SSL after Heartbleed, right?

Hello! Since Mother's day is happening soon, I'd love to ask you to cw or at least use some hashtag to make it easy to filter stuff out for people who don't wanna see it. I've lost my mother last year in January to cancer, there's a lot of people on fediverse in abusive relationship with their parents. There are many different reasons for why you should tag things. Thanks for attention!
