Six reasons why mastodon will fail - Mashable
1. I don't understand federation
2. I don't understand federation
3. My friends don't understand federation
4. I don't understand federation
5. I dislike the slang for things on Mastodon
6. Maybe there should be a tutorial on mastodon explaining how federation works and how to find people so that people don't get confused like this as much

@b Dear mashable, how to fix this issue:

learn. make a video. post on website. now all the new users you sent, will know what the fuck to do.

@b >Maybe there should be a tutorial on mastodon explaining how federation works
Too bad most people that do understand are on gnu social and are ban/block from mastodon~

@chen Counterpoint: your instance name is smugloli

@chen My point is that Mastodon seems to be quite explicitly defederating with instances that allow drawn child pornography :thinking:

@b Correction: he defederat with anyone who is a nazi.

@chen Besides, I'm on Mastodon right now and talking to you.

...didn't you say you knew how the federation worked?

@b At this point yes. I did broke it once.

@chen Well then why are you implying that Gargron has an iron grip over every Mastodon instance, despite him intentionally locking registrations so that federation would spread out more?

Also, in my opinion, the fact that trying image parsing can break GNU Social is a point in favor of Mastodon.

@b >Well then why are you implying that Gargron has an iron grip over every Mastodon instance
Well he does control the source code for mastodon so it pretty close.

>Also, in my opinion, the fact that trying image parsing can break GNU Social is a point in favor of Mastodon.
Well it only breaks if you have the "storeremotemedia" option on. Many instances have it off iirc. It really is no big deal~

@xj9 @chen not really, it's just that a good bit of it is removed from the federated timeline

@chen @xj9 hell, it might partially be not because it's intentionally blocking, but because nobody follows people on GNU Social from Mastodon due to an intrinsic userbase difference

@xj9 @chen spc isn't blocked. I follow people from it on my mastodon.social account.
smug allows drawn child pornography.
fzp allows drawn child pornography.

@chen @xj9 honestly, he's not a random dictator
he has a good reason for most of the stuff he does
have any of you tried like
asking

@xj9 @chen have you considered disallowing nazis in your code of conduct?

@xj9 @chen ...so that's a no
have you considered starting your own instance and also not being a nazi?

@b @chen i'm not a nazi (syndicalist actually) and yes, i'm working on starting a federation hosting company https://www.bbnet.io/about/

even then i'll probably stay on heldscalla, my friends are here, and i like the view of the fediverse that we have.

@xj9 @chen alright! cool! i'm just pointing out that you literally can just start your own instance to get unblocked because that's how the federation works and such

@chen @xj9 (also, perhaps gnu social needs a feature to generate as well as import lists of federated users that it knows about so sites can say "Here's our view of the federation!" and make kickstarting instances easier)

@xj9 @chen @b >calling everyone nazis

no like seriously, are you the same nbd i interacted with a year ago

@hakui @xj9 @chen I wasn't saying that they were a nazi I was pointing out that not being a nazi was a requirement

@xj9 @chen oh dearest @b what are you, canadian?

haven't seen anyone post loli for more than half a year now, just because we don't banhammer everything doesn't mean we're advocating for those stuff. get some amygdalae

@hakui @xj9 @chen and just because nobody posts it doesn't mean allowing it is okay

@b @chen @xj9 in the same vein just because you haven't crashed ICO into the ground yet it doesn't mean allowing you on it is okay eh?

@hakui @xj9 @chen what, the international coffeelover organization?

@hakui @xj9 @chen frankly, i just think that mastodon's well laid out code of conduct quite obviously conflicts with SmugLoli's code of conduct which doesn't exist it seems

@b @chen @xj9 @hakui personally, I have no problem with Gargron blocking whoever he wants — the issue is not explaining that to new users up-front.

@b @chen @xj9 fzp's One Simple Rule: nothing that gets the server in trouble with US law. the rest is up to the users to resolve among themselves

the more rules you list down the more edge cases there will be

@hakui @xj9 @chen US law isn't very specific. US law from what state? California?

@b @hakui @chen @xj9 none of this would be a problem if there was an option for users who have spines to unhide posts from unapproved instances and do their own moderation by blocking idiots.

@mono @xj9 @chen @hakui I agree.
Also, it's less "don't have spines" and more "don't want to deal with someone from slangforjumpingintoconversations.group jumping into conversations"

@b @chen @xj9 @mono if that's the case they probably want diaspora instead. it's like walking into a hakata ramen shop and complaining that all the noodles are too thin
@b @hakui @chen @xj9 there is a feature here to have a post only visible by other members of your instance.

also this is why groups exist, but nobody uses those because it's bad
@b @chen but that post wasn't from mastodon, it was from icosahedron

@why @chen yeah but it's still a mastodon instance

@b @chen except all of the shitty blocking is being done on mastodon.social. when referring to "mastodon" while "blocking users" is the topic, it's safe to assume you don't mean "any and all mastodon instances"

@why @chen the original post was literally talking about federation
everyone started assuming i meant mastodon.social first

@b and then the first reply from @chen was literally talking about blocking users

let's just drop it
@b @chen but i thought the tumblr crowd defended and respected pedophiles

@why What is the "tumblr crowd" and where did you get that idea?

@b Mashable.. gimme a break :stuck_out_tongue:

@b
very well could happen. it is not exactly simple, but that difficulty in its organization seems to me to be its attraction and where all its potential lies
