Some people simply wish to be mentally prepared for news. As well, some people may wish to go to Mastodon so they can escape from the news. Honestly, it doesn't matter why, just be respectful to other people's wishes since tagging political posts is quite easy.

@shivian Animated gifs are ones I've heard. The best thing to do is to do things and respect any content warnings people ask you for.

This is serious and needs to be discussed. People need to be aware of what their governments are doing. Social Media is what lead to the arab spring, occupy, and many other mass movements. Locking discussion down because it makes some uncomfortable does all of us a disservice.
@PoliticalVoyeur Most people are not completely tuning the news out. They just want to be emotionally ready and able to avoid the news so they don't stress themselves. Honestly, it's not locking discussion down, it's making sure people can handle it without stress.

@mellow_ Current events, especially politically, can stress people out and cause anxiety. Basically, we want to just avoid Twitter's way of "blast of upsetting political news"
