hey, instance ops! i put together a guide on adding S3 support to your instances along with a few troubleshooting tips! check it out!

I added all the nodes with more then one user to the mastodon network node and now it looks vary lopsided.

sending out a request to other server admins -- need advice from someone who's successfully set up the amazon s3 integration with mastodon

If twitter goes up for general sale we should crowdfund and buy it and make it too part FOSS and part of the fediverse

Watching individual minds move from "somebody could" to "I could" to "I can" to "I should" to "I am" in this shared amorphous dataspace is my personalized designer drug of choice.

Somebody got a little too flowchart-happy here. Why isn't this just a list

I guess I screwed up by not putting my behind a CW. Sorry about that

As an instance admin there is no good reason not to be transparent about your blocklist. Any security through obscurity you gain is a spectre, as it's trivial to throw up a new instance on Heroku or something to get around it when a malicious party determines they're blocked. Your users deserve to know who they can and can't talk to from your box.

Honestly, the CW is a brilliant and thoughtful move. It provides a "heads-up" that what lies ahead may be unsettling to some. What makes it even more thoughtful are the tooters who use the "top line" to give an idea of what the actual content is about. This alone is enough for me to fully embrace Mastodon. I, for one, will be here until the last instance goes offline. Yesterday, Mastodon gained my curiosity. . .today it has won my loyalty.

will i be banned from icosahedron if i admit that my favorite die is the d12?

@Vigdis @chaotic_signals Indeed - sysadmin is serious work. If instances are fairly small, then the potential for harm is fairly limited, but there's some big ones out there that may need a bit of...counseling about how to effectively go about sysadmin and community admin work.

There is something which scares me on mastodon. I see more and more people installing instances while they don't have a clue about what they're doing.

Then their instance is going to be listed on the website and people will be randomly redirected toward them when someone wants to use mastodon.

But then what happen?

Hosting someone's services is not fun or anything. It's a liability and I hope you have that in mind.

Also, pick carefully your instance.

@chaotic_signals Yeah you need to make it lower like 480 to account for username in the DM but it works
