Anyone want to read this blog post about SQLite and Pollen and tell me where it doesn't make sense? 🖋 https://thenotepad.org/posts/pollen-and-sqlite.html
I’ve been hacking at it off & on for weeks now, and the more I work on it the stupider I feel!
Tip for using Freedom (https://freedom.to/) on iOS:
If you never give Freedom permission to send you notifications, you will find that Freedom's content blocker doesn't activate/deactivate according to your scheduled sessions unless you close and reopen the app.
To fix it, go to your Freedom app, hit Settings, turn ON the "Session Start/End" notifications. This will trigger the iOS permissions prompt. Answer "Allow", then you can just turn off the "Session Start/End" notifications again.
I have 70k in retirement savings and I’d give it all away tomorrow in exchange for the US adopting Canada-style single payer health care.
Today I finished replacing my CenturyLink-provided router with a “homebrew” router, a small Dell desktop with 2 NICs and an SSD running Untangle.
With a i5-2400 running at 3.1Ghz and 8GB of RAM, it might be slightly overpowered for a home network. But there’s 1Gbps fiber on the other side of it, and now I can use all of it without overheating (or even slightly heating) anything.
And I can do so much more with it: permanent VPN tunnel to work, detailed port forwarding rules, etc.
OK now I want a Linux distro that boots to a REPL
Looks like icosahedron is back
Got this old old laptop
Flash a linux install onto a USB drive for it
Plug it in
F12 for boot menu

I had a KingDian SSD completely fail on me this week. Won’t power on, not recognized by BIOS. So don’t buy those.
Wow, FileZilla’s bundled installer includes a malware downloader and the dev defends it horribly.
If using FileZilla, uninstall and find something else. Even if this issue is fixed, the morally ambiguous and defensive response is very concerning.
Still waiting for word of the first fines levied under GDPR. Or any enforcement action at all really (notices, warnings, etc.).
After listening to an interview with the author of SQLite, I find I’ve been converted into saying it the way he does, “S-Q-L-ite”, as though it were a mineral (his metaphor).
So conflicted about lawn signs
Thinking of doing “a season” of weekly live-coding Twitch streams at some point. This post from last July has been a great for hints on how to set things up: “Lessons from my first year of live coding on Twitch” https://medium.freecodecamp.org/lessons-from-my-first-year-of-live-coding-on-twitch-41a32e2f41c1
Thing I needed yesterday: a tidy/linter tool for my handcrafted Atom feed.
The latest version of tidy says it does XML but boy did it balk at my feed.xml
Anyhow I got it to work anyway — https://github.com/otherjoel/thenotepad/blob/master/feed.xml.pp
loved these poems on tagvverk by Adam Greenberg https://tvverk.wordpress.com/2018/06/21/adam-greenberg/ "Each poem has been assembled using only language from the names of companies found in the Fourtune 500 list from 1989"

The best way to use computers is to rely only on software that is open source, 100% hardware agnostic, and eternal, existing apart from space and time
