I picked up /The Word Detective/ (2017), a memoir by a former editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, to read on the train. It's a good book for those who like the weirdities of English. And it got me to thinking about software names. E.g., the "-py-" particle in names for things built on or extending Python might go back to a proto-Indo-European root meaning "hollow, deep, bottom, depths", as in the home of the serpent Apollo slew at Delphi.

Or, perhaps, in the course of reading a single one of these sentences, many of which nest subordinate clauses like Matryoshka dolls, one replicates the experience, as when consumed by a memory, of losing track of one's thoughts in the present during the descent into reverie?

So I'm about 50 pages into Swann's Way and why is every other sentence as long as an entire paragraph in a normal book. Is this just how they wrote novels in France in the 1910s? Or is there a literary purpose to it? I'd think it was going for a sort of impressionistic/hazy/indistinct memory vibe if these sentences weren't all so meticulously grammatically correct.

so...a have a #programming / #programmeing question. a naive one, and because it's very naive, I'm trying to figure out how to ask it in a way that doesn't sound completely clueless

I have some half-formed ideas for a new sort of microblogging platform in mind, and I'd love to try to hack together a prototype, but the sticky point with me is how to manage authentication

I've done some programming in the past but I've never worked with anything where managing multiple users was an issue. so I don't really know how that's done

APIs for existing things, like Mastodon, seem horribly opaque and confusing to me. is there some easier way?

like, I've even though of trying to fake something up just using e-mail as the infrastructure, because at least I can sort of get my head round how that works
