so...a have a #programming / #programmeing question. a naive one, and because it's very naive, I'm trying to figure out how to ask it in a way that doesn't sound completely clueless

I have some half-formed ideas for a new sort of microblogging platform in mind, and I'd love to try to hack together a prototype, but the sticky point with me is how to manage authentication

I've done some programming in the past but I've never worked with anything where managing multiple users was an issue. so I don't really know how that's done

APIs for existing things, like Mastodon, seem horribly opaque and confusing to me. is there some easier way?

like, I've even though of trying to fake something up just using e-mail as the infrastructure, because at least I can sort of get my head round how that works

I'm a networking geek and researcher living in Berlin, currently working on a PhD in Computer Science. On a technical level, I like access networks such as WiFi and mobile networks, I like measurement and understanding performance, and I do low-level user-space programming in C. I sometimes talk about science, free software, and tech communities, among other things.

I have been thinking, for months, years really, about what should replace Mastodon. because while I like much of Mastodon, it's still too Twittery for me. it's mired in old ways of thinking

really it's about what you can expect from computer-geek culture, which is _desperately_, _hopelessly_ mired in the past, endlessly copying bad ideas over and over

the question is...should I try out something provided for me (Pleroma is enticing), or should I just hack something together _de novo_ and give my wacky ideas free rein instead of trying to express them through an existing framework?

where can I get more intense counselling for free?

like 1/hr a week isn't covering enough ground for me.

I want 2-3 hours a day, every day for a month. Fix it all rather than tiny bits that come unstuck because I'm still too broken to get a job or do anything meaningful

Finished my first Atreus #keyboard cut on my own laser.

Looking sharp, but I might need to source some new thinner cables to fit in the clearance so I can close the case.

I tried out black (eh, more like dark grey) paper with color pencils.
