... Or, what if we #ForkOffTogether and, wishing to emphasize the inter-operability with the most publicized platform in the fediverse, we call the new program something like "Metrodon". (I'm vetoing "Forksodon" right now.) On the one hand, this sounds a rather natural way to go. On the other, what does the Greek word for "tooth" have to do with social media?
I picked up /The Word Detective/ (2017), a memoir by a former editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, to read on the train. It's a good book for those who like the weirdities of English. And it got me to thinking about software names. E.g., the "-py-" particle in names for things built on or extending Python might go back to a proto-Indo-European root meaning "hollow, deep, bottom, depths", as in the home of the serpent Apollo slew at Delphi.

what would be others' suggestions for such a thing?

Hello cybre.space, time for #introductions! :)
I'm a networking geek and researcher living in Berlin, currently working on a PhD in Computer Science. On a technical level, I like access networks such as WiFi and mobile networks, I like measurement and understanding performance, and I do low-level user-space programming in C. I sometimes talk about science, free software, and tech communities, among other things.
