I'm trying to predict what will happen to Mastodon if marketing people start noticing it. Creating accounts across the entire network isn't difficult when every instance is listed. Will instances start banning advertisers? What about corporations who don't advertise but engage with their customers? What about people who talk positively about corporations? Where do you draw the line? Will we see corporate instances with inline advertising?

tomo's toot translator totally works! I can read Japanese toots, now.

You can get it at github.com/tomouchuu/mastodon- mastodon.al/media/Q5ZARNwvUtL3

Nice work, tomo.

#TipOfTheDay, #mastodon :

Under settings/ preferences you can
☑ Block notifications from non-followers
☑ Block notifications from people you don't follow

And under your profile settings:
☑ Make account private
Requires you to manually approve followers and defaults post privacy to followers-only

This can help deal with harassment (if it gets bad) while you are awaiting help from admins. Cheers /

Must get really complicated if someone accidentally kills a lot of crows at once.

"It's a murder of crows."
"Allegedly."
"No I mean it's a lot of crows. a murder of them."
"It's too early to tell. Could be crowslaughter."
"A group of crows is a murder."
"Are you saying it's impossible to murder just one crow? That's disgusting. They're not Pringles."

If you use one account for everything, you may not be seeing the full breadth of Mastodon. Get an account on an art instance, watch the cool art fly by the local timeline. Get an account on a French instance, bone up on your high school French. Make an instance for your coworkers, talk shop.

I don't wear swim trunks to work, I don't wear a suit to the pub, and I don't wear cargo shorts to my sister's wedding. Apply that to Mastodon and you might find it's quite natural. Decentralize yourself! 😁

For everyone asking, I tell you what. I'll write something long form here soon. That post is probably 20 years overdue anyway.

But let me give you the preview: If you want 1 or 100 or 0 names, personas, identities, alts, whatever, that's awesome. Don't let anyone tell you that there's only one you, or a concept of a "real name" or a "true identity". You define who you are at the moment.
