hi new Masto folk! can't wait to meet you all.

i'm JP, a queer, aspie, senior front end dev from New Jersey. when not coding things, i write fiction and essays, play video games, and read.

my writing side runs lunastationquarterly.com. my coding side is currently building a text-based game engine called Plastic.

i also run selfcare.tech for those that need some self care resources.

hmm. on a more personal level, the problem with spending those 2.5 hours on this is that i used up all of my mental energy and now have to stop with very little progress being made.

the only thing i learned out of the process is that i sometimes miss little details because of my aspergers.

in other news, water is wet.

2.5 hours of trying to debug that damn thing. the error i was getting had the same value as something in the gem i'm using.

on top of it, there was literally no way for any debugging tool to have caught this. tbh, a nested method declaration in a migration file should probably throw an error on `db:migrate`.

(and yes, i tag everything related to this project. i back these toots to dropbox for later documentation)

omg i solved my problem!!!

it was my damn migration file. somehow i nested `def change` inside another `def change`. ๐Ÿ˜ก

probably the most disheartening thing about running into an issue like this is that it could literally be anything from a logic error, a typo, or something missing in the code itself to a conflict with the environment.

there are many times a day i think this whole programming thing has gotten far too complex.

alright. the good news is that the file upload functionality is working properly. that's pretty hugely important tbh.

the bad news is rails still thinks there's data missing.

"no implicit conversion of nil into String" is one of the least useful error messages omfg.

hating right now. this is fine.

any on folks have thoughts on if there's a time you *shouldn't* use has_many :through relationships?

okay. got some mixes streaming from youtube and settled into my linux environment. development is resurrected.

where the hell did i leave off here? ๐Ÿ˜‚

spent the evening giving selfcare.tech a total overhaul. going to be adding more links over the weekend!

If I could tell the world just one thing
It would be that we're all ok
And not to worry because worry is wasteful
And useless in times like these
I will not be made useless
I won't be idled with despair
I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear

We will fight, not out of spite
For someone must stand up for what's right
Cause where there's a man who has no voice
There ours shall go singing

well shit. another of my editors (that's FOUR now) have had to step down.

i love them all, i really do, but now instead of gaining the FIVE we need from the applications we've received, we're actually only up ONE.

if any women-identified folks would like experience being an editor for a fucking awesome lit mag, fill out the application!

thinking with all the bad shit going on it's time to update selfcare.tech.

keeping that site going is some of my own self care practice.

i've got links to add and i want to plan an update to make it more useful to folks.

gonna spend some time with code and good music and being the kind of helper Mr. Rogers was always looking for when things get bad.

what a weird, interesting day.

a course on giving talks (youtube.com/watch?v=dUYHJLESqd) led to talking to the instructor on twitter & an offer of help for my first cfp.

horrible things happened in the world.

ticket i've been stuck on for a week is held up by Jenkins issues.

had two lovely meals with the dear ones.

a favorite author died.

found amazing new resources for the work i'm doing to shift my career.

not sure which end is up but i'm dancing with the chaos best i can. (thanks, Loki)

little things that made my life just a bit better that i still miss regularly:

- Google Reader
- Ben & Jerry's Bovinity Divinity
- The metal Tom's of Main tubes
- that favorite pair of jeans that wore out 10 years ago

my current thought for a slack redundancy plan for the two slack groups i manage is to set up a discord for each. probably the most straight forward option.

slack is down and i'm immediately aware of how dependent i am on that system for social outlets, organizing my own team, etc.

just as important, my whole career network is tied to slack. so the question of the day is how to build a redundant system to keep in touch with everyone?

i'm thinking linkedin would actually be useful for this.

:thaenkin: I wonder how we'd explain the concept of "cute" to aliens...

"aww, isn't he cute!"
"what?"
"over there, he's adorable!"
"human, that's an apex predator that routinely kills and eats mammals far larger than you"
"his box was too smol but he still sits!"
"fucking humans"
