You know what? Mastodon doesn't have to be as huge as Twitter to be awesome. If anything, it's better as a smaller thing. Part of why Twitter shat the bed is because it's a giant network of too many people with too few barriers keeping them from each other. Smaller, decentralized, more human (or furry) networks are better. Harder to monetize, but fuck monetization too.
@sanspoint And we can still cross-talk if we want (and are on instances that federate with each other)!
@sanspoint the reason i quit twitter is because of all the narcissism thats on there. I think we as a society with social media need to focus on knowledge
@sanspoint I expect mastodon will vastly improve after blowing up AND receeding. Everyone will hear about it, those interested will become part of it, and then when the shitposters realize it's too hard to get likes with a split community it will go back to being a tool instead of a shouting platform
@sanspoint Well said! I mentioned earlier that just like DirecTV vs Dish Network, Dish will never be as big as DirecTV...but it doesn't need to be. Different demographics...
@sanspoint It's not as if Twitter's monetization is going so well.
@RexfordGTugwell True that.
@sanspoint having an interesting side discussion about this offline. Mastodon also federates moderation, since one bad user can ruin the party for everyone on that node.
@sanspoint I'm a recovering former furry.
