Also we are going to need people to localize the onboarding modals. We already have volunteers for French and Japanese. Highest priority next would be German and Spanish, given the current Mastodon userbase. After that: Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Malay, and Russian (in no particular order) would all be good to have so we've covered the Top Ten Internet Languages.
If you wanna localize into any language, but especially those, direct post me please!! #MastoDev

@u2764 idk it seems to work pretty well? But yeah I mean in general we need localization at some point :P Even if mastodon doesnt support arabic too well yet it cant hurt to have a locale prepared when the time comes
@shel Sorry that was a really unhelpful description I don't know the technical words to describe it though
@u2764 me neither
@shel It'd be great if Mastodon could *cough* pay for translators imo
@u2764 it would be great if mastodon could pay anybody to do anything.
Right now Gargron still has to work other part-time jobs on top of Mastodon. When he's like, legit employed by Mastodon, I think there needs to be a Mastodon Foundation a la Mozilla... should it grow to that size
@shel Mastodon is very passive about raising funds though. Like name a nonprofit that's just like, "oh, you can donate something if you want, I guess." Even Mozilla is regularly sending out fundraising emails.
@shel Really there needs to be a Mastodon Kickstarter aimed at raising the funds to kick off a nonprofit, I think. Like I'm thinking of how FemFreq started as just a YouTube thing and then became a fully-fledged nonprofit org. It's awkward though because Gargron is a dev not a CEO.
@u2764 Yeah the "gargron needs to get better at asking for help and delegating and trusting others" thing is a general hurdle that is gonna have to be crossed at some point.
It's taking enough effort for me and denjin to get the discord in order
@u2764 yeah hahaha. I mean, that would also have to change but no fucking way can we have Gargron doing Development.
If the Mastodon Foundation paid me I could be a Development Manager. I've got some experience in that from my current job. I could have a big MastoBrunch and invite all the rich techies and get them to open their wallets.
"consider giving just $25 a week, that's less than you spent on that oil painting of your fursona swallowing an oil tanker!"
@gaditb i wish. that was google translate. My great-grandparents only spoke yiddish to discuss things they didn't want the kids hearing which i won't stop resenting them for cuz then my grandparents didn't know it
@shel I did notice some Israelis speaking Hebrew on the Federated a bit ago, and I'm pretty sure I looked enough at one of them's follow-er/-ing list that I could find at least one. So if you're looking for someone to translate it and notice RTL bugs...
@shel Turkish isn't a top 10 language but with the highest birdsite post take-down request rate in the world and frequent network blocks, federated social networking will be a big deal in Turkey. I can help with Translation efforts. I started on Tusky but the main app and onboarding is going to be as important as clients. https://github.com/Vavassor/Tusky/pull/65
@shel Does masto support Arabic anywhere? I thought its RTL support was still kinda bad.
