I want to get into hiking and camping.
If you're into those activities, please tell me, like, the number one most important thing I should know about to succeed and enjoy these activities.
@sixohsix Camping is best done at a hotel.
@me0w this is the hypothesis I'm trying to disprove. But I may fail.
@sixohsix
+1 to water and poop advice above
in a less practical sense, hiking/camping for me is a big time to just breathe. don't feel like you have to see the whole trail or fill the day up with activities - camping is the one time nothing is expected of you. build a fire and just sit and chat and watch it until it goes out. hang around and listen to the birds. stare out over the water in a way that would require dramatic swelling music if your life were a movie
@sixohsix Have good boots. Seriously, bad footwear will make you miserable.
@sixohsix the number one most important thing is that, barring substantial mobility issues, you can probably succeed and enjoy those things. you don't have to go disappear into the backcountry for a week or run up a 14k foot peak right out the gate to be "really" camping or hiking.
car camping for a day or two at a public campground somewhere interesting can be a pretty great place to start.
@sixohsix you should move at your own pace and take things a bit slower than what you know you can do. Enjoy it. Be outside. Be mindful. Have fun.
@sixohsix There’s lots of types of hiking. Don’t feel it has to be a high hill or mountain. Some of the best hikes i’ve had were in urban parks with cultivated trails.
@sixohsix if you are going to be gone for more than an hour bring water. If you are somewhere with bright sunlight put on sunscreen. Don't forget your sunglasses.
Also, pooping is important to remember. (Seriously, bathrooms aren't necessarily around when you are hiking or camping, you won't forget toilet paper twice.)
