FRIENDLY REMINDER
These instances are not run on commercial servers that proprietary companies can afford. More often than not, these are hobbyists running an instance for the benefit of Mastodon.
DO NOT SPREAD WORD OF MASTODON WITHOUT CLARIFYING THIS. If you do, everyone coming will flock to Mastodon.social, which puts a strain on that one instance and makes it look bad. There are other instances for a reason.
Other than that small preparation, be sure to donate to your instance admin.
@tfj I mean, mastodon.social isn't accepting new registrations regardless, and work's being done on a sort of landing page to explain stuff about mastodon, so we've got that going for us I guess. :)
@Eris Granted, I'm not saying this is of critical importance. This "new" tech is much easier to understand and grasp than some of the more techy stuff out there.
@tfj Yeah, I've seen non-techies have issues finding users, grasping the concept of federation, etc.
There's def a learning curve, and anything we can do to make that easier (either when telling people about Mastodon or onboarding folks via a landing page) is a good idea.
@tfj
Comme Mastodon.social a suspendu les inscriptions, les gens choisissent une autre instance (ou attendent).
Ce qui veut diire que pour la première fois, une masse de gens expériencent une instance fédérée et la fédération depuis des instances différentes ...
@jansegers Could somebody translate? I'm stuck using Mastodon on my phone since my desktop doesn't have internet access ATM, so I can't copy paste into a translator.
My excuses, like your first name is quite French, I accidently answered you in French
Like Mastodon.social has suspended their inscriptions, people will choose another instance (or just wait).
Which means that for the first time, a mass of people will experience a federated instance and federation parting from those different instances.
I probably read some toot in French before answering you... :=)
Since my stroke, things like that happen from time to time...
@tfj fortunately, French journalists from @numerama wrote a great article about this: http://www.numerama.com/tech/246684-debuter-sur-mastodon-9-questions-pour-tout-comprendre-au-reseau-social-decentralise.html
@tfj Mastodon.social currently points people at other instances, for this reason https://mastodon.social/media/J_nKzCPKwUlrRuNUlmI
