why does nobody ever listen to or trust each other on the internet

@u2764 sorry what did you say I wasn't listening

@u2764 probably because they don't listen and trust others in real life, too.

it seems foolish for anyone to expect people to take what they have to say in good faith, but without that expectation then what is the point of speaking at all? nobody has the time to write essays accounting for every perceivable bias. why listen to anyone at all if you're not willing to meet them where they stand?

i think we both know the answer to that question and frankly if that's the political culture we're intent on building it's best that i stick to romance.

this is, incidentally, why everyone hates twitter

@u2764 at the risk of unintentionally trivializing deep problems:

I feel like there's a certain level of {security, courage, inner peace, ...} that one must have to buy the ability to approach people in good faith.  From this standpoint, what we see on the Internet is a reflection of how much of the above we collectively lack in life.

(I used to think I knew which of those qualities were sufficient, but I kept running into people who provided counterexamples.)

@ninjawedding I think there's definitely a level of innocence, maybe even naïveté. And of course not everyone is going to be in a position to rise to that standard. But I think we can acknowledge that maybe not everyone is in a position to do a good-faith reading of everyone, while still holding it as something to maybe strive for. And if there are other prerequisites for that, then maybe we should make those our goals as well.
