There should be like, better notification about things not federating or something because right now someone might follow me and I go to look at their profile and it's just EMPTY because my toots federate over there but their toots don't federate over here yet. Really makes following-back more difficult.

I don't normally do substantial tech criticisms or bug reports but that's just something I've noticed.

@u2764 I didn't realize that you can't see toots of someone who's not in your federation.

@Manu So your server only sends toots to my server if either (A) you mention me (like you just did) or (B) someone on my server follows you. If neither of those are the case then they won't show up.

I can still go to your static profile page (social.targaryen.house/@Manu) to view them but it's an extra step.

@u2764 ok, get it now. Thanks for the explanation. It does sound like that shouldn't be the case though.

@u2764 the whole federation thing, will that be an eternal headache for this platform? Necessary evil?

@pseudomichael If I go to someone's profile, it *should* be possible for the server (or at least my browser) to ask for their public toots and display them, it just isn't right now. Or you could at least have a message saying "Go view this on the other site where you can see all their stuff." Like, federation has some problems but I think there are still things you could do.

@u2764 oh man, gonna be hard to get used to "toots" as the verb haha.

@u2764 that complexity is going to make the site hard to use for "normals" who won't have any patience for the confusion. Maybe that's ok but Twitter is already a barrier for normal folks who find it impenetrable. I think this microblogging "thing" should be a public channel so I'm rooting for something like Mastodon.

@pseudomichael I think steps can be made to make it way simpler—Facebook is a nightmare from a technology standpoint, imo, but tons of people use it everyday without being that tech literate. It's just a matter of presentation and finding the right metaphors, I guess.

@u2764 good point. People put up with the mess on Facebook because of the network effect. How to get that draw to an open platform without it being hijacked by a corrupting business model?

@pseudomichael Yeah IDK. Traditionally Facebook / Insta got popular with the youth and then expanded from there but Twitter / Masto both seem to be targeting the more 20-50-year-old crowd. I guess we'll have to wait and see haha.

@u2764 well, I can say it's already so refreshing to have pleasant conversation with strangers like I've already had here. The gentle innocence of a new network before it goes downhill :)
