Imagine the impact on our economy if the French government had invested several millions in translating manual pages and wikis to French and creating French development Q&A communities instead of an anti-piracy authority.

@wire Wouldn't the impact on the economy be like... nothing?

@majormobius Who knows? Anyway, I'm pretty sure a "good" sysadmin student is a sysadmin student who speaks English and can find help on Stack Overflow. Technologically speaking, our country is weak because our English level is terrible.

@wire @majormobius I would dare to say that writing a well-crafted automatic translator is better than investing in manual translation, as software evolves quickly.

@wire Microsoft documentation is integrally translated to French for example -- a good part of the translation is done automatically without human intervention.

@my123 Software evolves quickly: correct, so the best thing is still to make French people correctly speak English. 8D

@my123 However, having 300 State employees who would translate the doc as the flow comes wouldn't cost that much.

@wire Microsoft translates an important part of the docs automatically, and ends with full docs in FR. It's a part of MS' developer advantage that shouldn't be underestimated...

@my123 I don't underestimate it, that's just pretty bad translation. I even fucked up my Windows partition with this, leading me to definitely drop Windows in favor of our Lord and Savior, RMS

@wire I had to fully reinstall Windows two days ago. ;-)
The English docs are also sometimes not that good
