"i think modern web design is bad, and the stuff google is pushing to keep web design bad is also bad."
rando:
"i think javascript-only web apps are bad, and by that metric, stuffing everything into a web browser and relying it as if it was an entire os is bad."
"yet you use a web browser, and a js web app. curious. i am very intelligent."
like i would love twitch to not be a browser-based five-layers-of-javascript turd, but they do a pretty good job of making it difficult to use anything else
i don't get an option to continue using the still-working, has-worked-for-a-literal-decade gmail or gcalendar interface, i get dragged kicking and screaming to the new version that consumes half a gb of memory and includes a bunch of obnoxious changes
i'm trying to find a post talking about this somewhere but there's no pagination so i have to sit here and hold end while the world infinitely scrolls by with a new set of 12 ajax requests to report "user is highly engaged and reading a lot!!! infinite scroll works!!!" while loading the next two posts
@Xkeeper Have you experienced some good stuff that makes Material not-good? I'd like to see
@alice the lack of borders or depth (a barely visible drop shadow is not good), the annoying animations, removing things from places they make sense (top bar) to places where they're bad and in the way (compose button hovering over content)
@Xkeeper I call this "out of sight, out of mind" design. (Spoiler: I think it's awful) It's like putting all your clothes in drawers and behind closets and asking someone else to find your red V-neck. What happened to the old "as few clicks as possible" design mantra to get where you should?
I'll add to your complaints: all these animations and hover-pops require a taxing amount of JS and HTML5.
@alice or just letting the user know literally anything
buttons with words on them? nope, here's a monochrome icon of a box with an arrow on it. what does it mean? who knows. lol
@Xkeeper The next time I think my site is outdated I'll remember your complaint
@Xkeeper "Growth without end" isn't a a trend exclusive to greedy financial organizations. Unfortunately, developers are falling into it too. I've seen the way some sprints go and it makes me want to hurl. "What new bullshit can we cram into this bad boy this week?"
On top of that, platforms tend to succeed due to ad money and branding rather than UI/UX.
@alice *pats top of website* this bad boy can fit so many ads in it
@Xkeeper Legit tho mastodon keeps scrolling fed feeds AS I click someone to interact, causing me to click the next one. Or just flips the hell out trying to stay still as it loads more into the feed.
@alice this is my favorite feature of all social media websites, especially when they're lagging because updating a div or two is very hard when you have to attach 37 dingbats to it
sure meant to open this image that wasn't there when i hit click!!!!!!
@Xkeeper My favorite feature is when PATCH for a new entry to the feed just returns the same one like 10 times because who_fucking_knows
