i used to be really into having the newest computer gadget. now i use refurbished hardware. it's so much cheaper. it lasts. it reduces landfill waste. it's great, and i don't really feel like i am missing out on much tech-wise.

here are some tips if you need tech stuff but don't want to spend a lot of money, support horrible companies, and such (1/n)
for a computer, i use a Lenovo Thinkpad T430. You can get one of these on ebay for around $80. I replaced the harddrive in mine for an SSD so that ended up costing a little bit more, but now it runs about the same as a macbook air.

if you install linux (which these days is easier than installing Windows) you can get a free OS with all the common software you need for free
for a phone, you can get a Moto g5 plus. You can get these for around $50 on ebay. these work great out of the box, but if you want an upgrade motorola supports unlocking the bootloader and then you can install LineageOS for more of a new feel

it has great battery life and runs everything smoothly i've thrown at it. the camera isn't the best, but it works fine for me. i've never gotten complaints about the quality of my photos, just if you are a photographer this might not be the best choice
for gaming, you can buy a PS3 controller. you can find these on ebay for less than $20

if you install an application called retroarch, on either the computer or the phone, you can use the PS3 controller to play games from the NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, GBA, PS2 ... the list goes on and on
so, now you've spent around $150 for your computer, phone, and games. buying these refurbished keeps waste from the landfills. they are all really well supported and the computer has tons of replacement parts available on the cheap so you can repair it if anything breaks instead of throwing it away
tech? no! man, see...

@polymerwitch same but it's a Thinkpad X301, a Nexus 5, and a Gravis Gamepad from Goodwill.

out of the three the Nexus is least-satisfactory so maybe if I drop it I'll check out the Moto 5g; thanks for the tip.

@technomancy @polymerwitch moto x4 is faster i think? going for $100-ish used about now, also supports lineage os
