initial impressions: the keyboard is far better than any laptop keyboard I've used before, but the stagger on it is different from my thinkpad so it's really throwing me, plus there's an annoying key between A and ctrl; I really need to remap the whole layout.
it runs wayland out of the box, which I've never used before. sway looks nice but I couldn't even figure out how to get it change the layout to dvorak. I need to load up exwm, but xorg is suppossedly only experimentally supported.
the trackball is real nice but I want to try swapping the switches out for clicky ones. using it in scroll mode is way too sensitive out of the box; gotta try adjusting the sensitivity.
the range on the wifi is really low compared to my old thinkpad.
I gotta say the chassis on this thing is more solid than I expected, especially compared to the Novena. the hinges feel as strong as a Thinkpad.
the assembly process was pretty easy, all just screws and cable connectors.
they keep saying Wayland is ready for prime time but reality keeps disagreeing
MNT Reform lifehack: haven't gotten around to remapping your keyboard firmware yet? try this hardware hack to no longer get bothered by that pesky key between A and Ctrl, or the one between Z and Shift.
ok, finally remapped my reform kb. that was easier than expected. however, the firmware does not support layers yet, so I will have to add that to the codebase before my own replacement kb would be feasible.
remapped to use dvorak in the firmware rather than mapping it in OS: https://source.mnt.re/technomancy/reform/-/blob/2a6d074ba1fd6ad39ed59d27eb578e531943ebd9/reform2-keyboard-fw/Keyboard.c
on the Atreus I always did the mapping in the OS because that was the only way to get the internal keyboard to be in dvorak, but that's a problem I don't have any more.
the middle two thumb keys are a bit hard to hit with the case all the way on. in the first pic you can see my thumb is resting on the rim of the case and can't press further to hit the key. in the second with the rim removed my thumb is free to press all the way down.
feels like I need to cut some slots in the rim to press them properly.
@technomancy that looks like opengl rendering with the wrong or no texture applied. has happened to me many times while working on text rendering for my game library.
@technomancy emacs is still hilariously, hideously recognizable
@technomancy This is what enacts should always look like. ;-)
@technomancy I feel okay about autocorrect ignoring the existence of emacs.
@technomancy I usually just bridge a pad on accident and have one less row to worry about
@zpojqwfejwfhiunz ah you mean during soldering? yeah I didn't solder this one myself (wouldn't have used browns if I had!)
gonna design a replacement KB eventually (literally the whole reason I got this machine) but it's gonna be a while before I can find time for that
@technomancy @zpojqwfejwfhiunz God, that's awesome
@technomancy Sweeeeeet.
@technomancy using Wayland for many years but with xwayland where needed ofc. It depends no how FF is packaged I think
@charlag my only other experience with wayland is that I got a thinkpad off craigslist and gave it to my kids; it crashed randomly until I told it to stop using wayland and then everything worked perfectly
